Tascam X-48

The X-48 is the latest in SaneWave’s long list of embedded PC designs for the pro audio market. This groundbreaking hard disk recorderincludes a full-featured mix engine, e.q. dynamics and up to four VST plug-ins per track/channel operated via a native Graphic User Interface. The X-48 was unveiled to much acclaim at NAB, 2005.

When Tascam set their sights on designing the next generation of hard disk recorder, SaneWave was a natural choice. We pioneered the development of embedded PC hard disk recorders with built-in GUI’s. We understood the needs of the engineer for a rugged, easy to use and powerful recording solution; full editing features and plug-in support without the expense and downsides of a DAW.

The result is Tascam’s new X-48; the world's first standalone 48-track Hybrid Hard Disk Workstation. It integrates the best of both worlds: the stability and ease-of-use of a purpose-built hard disk recorder, with the GUI, editing features and plug-in compatibility of a computer-based digital audio workstation. The X-48 gives you total hands-on command.

The Power of Embedded PC’s

Embedded PC designs are a cornerstone of SaneWave designs. We’ve done more of these products than any other design team, and we’ve been doing them for years. The heart of the X-48 is an Intel processor running the X-48 system on top of Windows XP Embedded OS. All DSP and mixing functions are performed in kernel mode for increased processing efficiency and near zero latency performance. And of course it supports VST plug-ins, with up to four inserts per channel.

With all this power at hand, the X-48 has plenty left to include a native Graphic User Interface that supports all recording and mixing functions. Simply connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard; no computer necessary. Workflow is fast and smooth; critical for professional applications. Back-up is simple and secure thanks to the on-board DVD+RW drive and proven file system that comes with Windows XP Embedded.
